Common problem
Air Conditioner Not Cooling in Highbury
An air conditioner not cooling is the most common call we get through a Highbury summer. Highbury Air Conditioning finds the cause, fixes it properly, and gives you the price in writing before we start.
Why Your Air Conditioner Stops Cooling in Highbury on a Hot Day
A unit that runs but does not cool usually points to something simple. Highbury homes are mostly 1960s to 1980s brick and brick-veneer houses, and their systems work hard through dry summers where consecutive days over 40 are normal.
We repair and clean systems across the suburb every week, so we know what fails here and why.
The Usual Causes, Cheapest First
Most not-cooling calls come down to one of four things, and the cheap ones are the most common. Here is the order we check:
Choked filters and coils
Settings and thermostat
Low refrigerant
Compressor or capacitor failure
Checks You Can Safely Do Yourself
Three things are safe to try before you call anyone:
Filters
Settings
Outdoor unit
If the unit still will not cool after that, stop there. Refrigerant, wiring and compressor faults are not homeowner jobs.

When to Call for Air Conditioning Repairs
Call us when the filters are clean, the settings are right and the room still will not drop.
Deeper signs to watch for. Ice on the pipes, a hissing sound, or the system tripping its circuit all point to a fault inside the refrigerant circuit.
Those faults need a licensed technician with the right equipment. Our page on air conditioning repairs covers what a visit involves, and if the unit is dripping instead, see air conditioner leaking water, which is a different fault with a different fix.
How it works
How We Fix a System That Is Not Cooling
- 1
Diagnose
We test airflow, pressures and electricals to find the actual fault, not the obvious one.
- 2
Quote
You get the price in writing before any work starts. No hourly rates, no bill shock.
- 3
Repair
We fix it with the right parts, and every job is backed by our Lifetime Labour Warranty.
- 4
Test and advise
We run the system through a full cooling cycle and tell you what will keep it healthy.
If the compressor has failed or parts are discontinued, we will say so. Replacement often costs less than three more years of repairs, and our air conditioning replacement team handles the changeover.
Why Highbury Aircon Owners Call Us First
We are a family-owned Adelaide business with ten years operating and 500+ 5-star reviews, on the regular run through the north-east every week. Work is carried out under ARC Licence L162586, a RAC01 - Full Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Licence, so refrigerant handling is done legally and safely.
Older brick-veneer homes make up most of the suburb's stock. We carry the parts and know the quirks of the systems that went into them decades ago.
Questions
Not Cooling Questions, Answered
Why is my air conditioner running but not cooling?
Most often the filters or outdoor coil are choked with leaf litter, which cuts airflow, though low refrigerant from a slow leak causes the same symptom and needs a licensed repair.
Can I fix it myself?
You can safely clean or replace the filters, check the remote settings and clear debris around the outdoor unit, but refrigerant work, wiring and compressor faults must be left to a licensed technician.
How quickly can you get here?
We work Highbury and the north-east every week, urgent breakdowns get a within-the-hour response where availability allows, and during heatwaves we prioritise households with no working cooling at all.
Is it worth repairing an older unit?
Often yes, but if the compressor has failed or parts are discontinued, replacement usually costs less than repeated repairs, and we will tell you honestly which way the numbers fall before you commit.
