Safe Checks Before You Call About a Cooling Smell
You can rule out the simple causes in a few minutes. Anything beyond this list needs a licensed tech.
- Clean or replace the filters and smell the airflow again.
- Check the condensate line outside for standing water or slime.
- Clear leaf litter off the outdoor unit.
- If the smell is burning, stop there and switch the system off at the wall.
Filters and debris are fair game. Refrigerant, wiring and anything inside the unit are not, and poking at them can turn a cheap fix into a repair job. If a clean does not shift the smell, air conditioning cleaning done properly, coils and all, is usually the answer.
